Caring for Your Central Oxygen System with a Larger Central System

Maintaining your central oxygen system is crucial for the efficient and safe operation of your veterinary clinic. Here are some key points to ensure your system runs smoothly and effectively.
Oxygen Cylinder Management
Labeling and Storage:
- Always label oxygen cylinders to indicate whether they are full, in use, or empty.
- Store cylinders securely to prevent accidents.
Ordering Schedule:
- Implement a regular order schedule for oxygen cylinders or maintain additional cylinders on hand.
- Alternatively, order a replacement cylinder immediately when one is depleted.
Leak Detection:
- Utilize an oxygen-safe leak test solution to identify leaks.
- Keep a clean wrench available for disconnecting and connecting the oxygen pigtail, even if delivery personnel usually handle cylinder changes.
Monitoring Cylinder Pressure
Pressure Gauges:
A bank showing 2000 PSI is full, 1000 PSI is half full, and 500 PSI is a quarter full. Regularly check the gauges to determine if a cylinder change is necessary.
Manifold Systems
Types of Manifolds:
Manual Changeover: Requires manual switching between banks of cylinders.
Semi-Automatic Changeover: Partially automates the switching process.
Fully Automatic Changeover: Automatically switches between banks when one is depleted.
Managing Cylinders:
With larger systems, all cylinders in a bank can remain open. The manifold will draw oxygen from the bank in use and switch to another bank as needed.
Reserve Cylinder Strategy:
If space is limited, keep the far-right cylinder closed as a reserve. Open it only when the system is depleted to provide emergency oxygen and allow time to arrange for replacements.
Daily Operation Procedures
Opening Procedure:
- Slowly open the oxygen cylinder valve for the day’s use and check the regulator gauge for oxygen levels.
- Ensure the central line PSI is between 40 and 60 PSI.
- Connect necessary equipment for the day.
Closing Procedure:
- Disconnect all anesthesia machines.
- Disconnect all accessories from oxygen wall outlets or ceiling drops.
- Close the valves on the oxygen cylinders.
- Troubleshooting Leaks
Identifying a Leak:
To troubleshoot a potential leak, ensure the oxygen system is not in use as it requires closing the cylinder valves temporarily.
Check all oxygen outlets and drops to ensure nothing is connected to the central system.
Monitoring Gauges:
Note the manifold gauge readings, with the left gauge showing central system line pressure (40-60 PSI) and the right gauge showing cylinder PSI.
Close the cylinder valves and wait at least 10 minutes. If the needle position drops, a leak is present.
Common Leak Sources:
The most frequent leak occurs at the pigtail connection between the manifold and the cylinder. Disconnect the pigtail, clear debris, check for damage, and reconnect.
Another common leak source is equipment left connected to the system. Ensure all items are disconnected at the end of the day.
Repressurizing and Retesting:
After addressing potential leak points, repressurize the system and monitor the gauges again.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure the longevity and reliability of your central oxygen system, providing a safe and efficient environment for your veterinary practice.
